WATERGATE APARTMENT RENOVATION - completed at Treacy & Eagleburger Architects
Located in the Watergate apartment complex in Washington DC, this one-bedroom unit is at the end of a long, continuously curving corridor. The design strategy is to extend the curving corridor into the apartment foyer, which then culminates in the public space of the open floor plan. This public space (living, dining, sitting and kitchen) has long extended views across the Potomac River on one side and the Kennedy Center Plaza on the other, and enfronts a large outdoor terrace formed by the webbing of the south and west buildings. An important design component is the PDU (Prairie Dog Unit), a kitchen island storage unit that provides a screening effect to the working parts of the kitchen. This screening allows for a more open floor plan without exposing the sometimes messy process of cooking.
